Ebony B. Bookman

Ebony B. Bookman currently serves as the Chief of Staff for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Director. A geneticist by training, Dr. Bookman’s current responsibilities encompass substantive program matters, policy and program development. Dr. Bookman began serving at the NIH in 2002 as a Research Geneticist in the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In that role, she developed, conducted and administered research in genetics, epidemiology, and prevention. Before coming to the NIH, Dr. Bookman served as Project Director of the National Human Genome Research Laboratory at Howard University.

Dr. Bookman currently serves on the Genetics Committee and Ethics Advisory Board of the Jackson Heart Study.

Dr. Bookman received her M.S. in Genetic Counseling and Ph.D. in Genetics and Human Genetics from Howard University. She received her B.S. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her interests include ethics, molecular genetics, genetic epidemiology, health disparities, and minority development.
