Thomas Matte

Dr. Thomas Matte is Director of Environmental Research in the Bureau of Environmental Surveillance and Policy at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In that capacity he is directing health department studies of the health impacts of extreme heat and air pollution as well as the New York City Community Air Survey, a PlaNYC initiated study of neighborhood air quality variation in New York City.

Dr. Matte worked as a medical epidemiologist with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for much of his career. His research has spanned several environmental and chronic disease areas, including: pathways, risk factors, and prevention of lead exposure domestically and abroad, asthma in daycare populations, prenatal and early life exposures and their relationship to later health status, and evaluation of major New York City Health initiatives including nicotine patch distribution, a trans fat ban and calorie labeling initiatives.
