This is fundamentally a bill that will protect public health and safety for generations.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Top5-state-building-deaths_FINAL052121.png\">Studies<\/a>\u00a0have found that air pollution from buildings burning fossil fuels leads to nearly 2,000 premature deaths each year across New York State. Other <a href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/insight\/gas-stoves-pollution-health\/\">studies<\/a>\u00a0have found that children living in a home with a gas stove are up to 42 percent more likely to develop asthma. Our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weact.org\/2023\/01\/we-act-for-environmental-justices-out-of-gas-in-with-justice-pilot-finds-significant-improvements-in-indoor-air-quality-when-transitioning-from-gas-to-induction-stoves-in-affordable-housing\/\">Out of Gas, In with Justice pilot study<\/a> found that transitioning from a gas stove to an electric induction stove in affordable housing resulted in significant reductions in indoor air pollution, including nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide \u2013 two pollutants that have adverse health impacts.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers living in environmental justice communities \u2013 primarily communities of color and low-income \u2013 are already exposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/press-releases\/racial-ethnic-minorities-low-income-groups-u-s-air-pollution\/\">disproportionate levels of outdoor air pollution<\/a>. Reducing the pollution in their homes \u2013 given that we all spend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/report-environment\/indoor-air-quality\">around 90 percent of our time indoors<\/a> \u2013 would provide a significant benefit to their health.
