Yet, we have a major source of pollution that is literally right at our doorsteps that policymakers are not doing enough to address. The fossil fuel industry has worked hard to keep us burning gas, propane, and oil under our roofs, all the while ignoring the impacts on our health and the climate,\u201d said <\/span><b>Sierra Club Building Electrification Campaign Deputy Director Amneh Minkara,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the lead author of the report. \u201cThis new report makes it abundantly clear that we must use all the tools at our disposal to help households switch to clean, efficient electric space and water heating.\u201d<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning fossil fuels for space and water heating emits health-harming and climate-disrupting pollution, including nitrogen oxides (NO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), carbon monoxide (CO), fine particulate matter (PM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and carbon dioxide (CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 The negative outcomes caused by this pollution disproportionately burdens vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, low income communities, communities of color, renters, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our communities face unrelenting pollution both inside and outside our homes,\u201d says <\/span><b>Annika Larson, Federal Policy Associate at WE ACT for Environmental Justice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;We produce less pollution, but we bear its harshest consequences because of substandard housing and environmental conditions. This recent report emphasizes that pollution from fossil-fuel home equipment is a major climate and health threat, further deepening environmental injustices. The message is clear: building decarbonization must prioritize our communities.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese are pollutants that are damaging people\u2019s lungs, hearts and brains. They really need to be brought under control,\u201d said <\/span><b>Barbara Gottlieb, national Environment &amp; Health Program Director for Physicians for Social Responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s time to get these fossil-fueled polluters out of our buildings and communities. As health professionals, we call for replacing them with clean electric-powered space and water heaters. We\u2019ll get cleaner air and better health as a result.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global pollution from the building sector hit a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/co2-emissions-buildings-and-construction-hit-new-high-leaving-sector\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record high<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2022. In the United States, buildings now account for about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/monthly\/pdf\/mer.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of total energy consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-04\/documents\/us-ghg-inventory-2021-main-text.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">% of direct greenhouse gas (GHG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pollution. Although lighting, electronic devices, and most cooling equipment are powered by electricity, the majority of U.S. buildings still burn fossil fuels to power heating equipment like water heaters and furnaces. The most recent updates to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/air-emissions-inventories\/national-emissions-inventory-nei\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/inventory-us-greenhouse-gas-emissions-and-sinks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pollution inventories show that emissions of harmful pollutants from the building sector \u2013 like NO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 continue to increase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August marked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/press-releases\/2022\/08\/twenty-six-health-and-climate-organizations-call-epa-limit-pollution-fossil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one year since<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sierra Club and 25 other organizations petitioned the EPA to regulate outdoor air emissions from buildings and set zero-NOx standards for appliances. The agency has not yet responded to that petition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State and local governments are beginning to take action to address building pollution, and initial funding solutions from the federal government, like the Inflation Reduction Act\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/understanding-ira-home-energy-rebates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home Energy Rebates Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are beginning to roll out to support the transition to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/default\/2022\/10\/heat-pump-101-lowdown-hottest-and-coolest-appliance-you-ve-never-heard\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zero-pollution technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, more action is needed for the country to meet climate, public health, and justice goals.
