{"id":4269,"date":"2017-04-05T17:30:07","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T21:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/while-trump-moves-backwards-nyc-passes-bills-to-protect-environmental-justice-communities\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T19:18:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T00:18:27","slug":"while-trump-moves-backwards-nyc-passes-bills-to-protect-environmental-justice-communities","status":"publish","type":"update","link":"http:\/\/weact.org\/es\/updates\/while-trump-moves-backwards-nyc-passes-bills-to-protect-environmental-justice-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"While Trump Moves Backwards, NYC Passes Bills to Protect Environmental Justice Communities"},"template":"","class_list":["post-4269","update","type-update","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","update_type-press-release","person_tax-cecil-corbin-mark"],"acf":{"details":{"":null,"featured_image":5221,"update_type":[366],"focus_area":false,"authors":[171],"abstract":""},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<b>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\r\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April 5th, 2017\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooke Havlik, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, 212-961-1000 ext. 320, <\/span><a href=\"mailto:brooke@weact.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brooke@weact.org<\/span><\/a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York, NY \u2014 As President Trump\u00a0moves to shrink federal budgets at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and altogether eliminate EPA\u2019s Office of Environmental Justice, New York City Council voted today to protect low-income New Yorkers and communities of color, who bear the disproportionate burden of environmental injustices, such as air pollution and its associated health problems. \u00a0The council passed two bills, The Environmental Justice Study Bill (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=1805815&amp;GUID=8901A89B-078E-4D47-88D8-EA3E48E715A1&amp;Options=&amp;Search=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intro 359<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and The Environmental Justice Policy Bill (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=2460360&amp;GUID=0C9F8C9D-5F14-4C1E-B4AD-37BB96F82BA3&amp;Options=&amp;Search=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intro 886A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which will provide the city and all New Yorkers more information to identify and address these injustices. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>The Environmental Justice Study Bill (Intro 359) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will amend the city\u2019s administrative code to require that a citywide study of potential environmental justice communities be conducted. \u00a0The results of this study will be made available to the public and placed on the city\u2019s website. \u00a0<\/span><b>The Environmental Justice Policy Bill (Intro 886A) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amends the city\u2019s administrative code to require city agencies to develop plans to address environmental injustices in communities of color and low-income communities. The plans must be in consultation with these communities, and establishes and environmental justice advisory body, comprised of EJ advocates, to work with the city on identifying and addressing environmental injustices. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>WE ACT for Environmental Justice\u2019s Deputy Director, Cecil Corbin-Mark<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said, \u201cThe New York City Council just sent a big message to our city and the entire country\u2014environmental injustice <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is real <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it matters.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These bills will provide NYC a comprehensive legislative strategy to address environmental injustices throughout the city of New York, and will serve as a model for other cities in a Trump era, when we know local action will have a huge impact on community health and reducing health disparities.
