Building on the success of similar legislation we helped pass in New York City, we helped pass New York State's All Electric Building Act, requiring all new construction to be built all-electric - without the use of fossil fuel appliances like gas stoves, water heaters, and boilers."},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_hero_links","acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_hero_links":{"title":"","abstract":"","links":null}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"Did you know that your gas stove produces harmful indoor air pollution, including toxic gases such as nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, which happen to be the same nasty gases that come out of a car\u2019s exhaust pipe? In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/health\/a39036270\/gas-stoves-leak-methane\/\">studies<\/a>\u00a0have found that gas stoves emit so much nitrogen dioxide that by the time you boil water on a gas stove you will have exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s outdoor air quality standards\u2026inside your own home!\r\n\r\nThis indoor air pollution is harmful to the health of you and your family. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/insight\/gas-stoves-pollution-health\/\">studies<\/a>\u00a0have found that children living in a home with a gas stove are up to 42 percent more likely to develop asthma. And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Top5-state-building-deaths_FINAL052121.png\">studies<\/a>\u00a0have found that air pollution from these buildings leads to nearly 2,000 premature deaths each year across New York State.\r\n\r\nOn top of that, buildings burning gas and other fossil fuels produce a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions, which are the cause of climate change. In fact, a recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/01\/27\/1075874473\/gas-stoves-climate-change-leak-methane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0found that gas stoves leak methane (gas is mostly methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases) even when not in use. And numerous studies also show that both air pollution and climate change disproportionately impact low-income communities and communities of color, which is why decarbonization \u2013 transitioning away from the use of fossil fuels \u2013 is critical to advance environmental justice.\r\n\r\nThat is why we leveraged the success of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/programs\/decarbonizing-new-york-citys-future-buildings-with-local-law-154\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our Gas Free NYC law<\/a>\u00a0here in New York City to advocate for New York State\u2019s All-Electric Building Act (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2021\/s6843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S.6843A<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2021\/a8431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A.8431<\/a>), which will ensure that new buildings will be all-electric \u2013 without the use of gas or other fossil fuels \u2013 beginning in 2024. In May 2023, Governor Kathy Hochul signed this bill into law as part of legislation\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2023\/s4006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S.4006C<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2023\/a3006\/amendment\/c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A.3006C<\/a>) required for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-announces-highlights-historic-fy-2024-new-york-state-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York State\u2019s Fiscal Year 2024 Budget<\/a>. Beginning in 2026, new buildings 7 stories and under must be built all electric, and beginning in 2029 for taller buildings.","include_drop_cap":false}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.1 -
