We conducted a community-based investigation of the ingredients found in beauty and personal care products sold in Northern Manhattan."},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_hero_links","acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_hero_links":{"title":"","abstract":"","links":null}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>A Community-based Investigation of Ingredients in Beauty and Personal Care Products Sold in Northern Manhattan<\/b><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We use a variety of personal care products every day, everything from cosmetics to soaps and shampoos to hair straighteners. But do we know what's really in these products, and what impacts they may have on our health? You'd need a science degree to identify most of the ingredients, and a medical degree to understand their potential impacts on our health.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is that personal care products are largely unregulated. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pluschem.com\/blog\/eu-and-us-cosmetic-regulations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food &amp; Drug Administration only bans 11 ingredients whereas the European Union bans 1,300<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to concerns about the threat they pose to human health.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6011\" src=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Inside-the-Beauty-Aisle-Fact-Sheet-1-291x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"300\" \/>To get a better understanding of what ingredients are in the products being sold on store shelves in Northern Manhattan, we teamed up with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearya.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to use its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearya.com\/survey\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearya Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> app for a citizen science project - Inside the Beauty Aisle - collecting data on the toxic ingredients found in personal care products sold in stores throughout our community. Our members scanned 733 unique beauty and personal care products sold in local beauty supply stores of predominantly Black and Latinx neighborhoods in Northern Manhattan.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product label photos and ingredient lists were then analyzed using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearya.com\/insights\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearya Insights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform to identify chemicals of concern. Chemicals of concern in this analysis include ingredients linked to health concerns such as cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive harm, PFAS (\u201cforever chemicals\u201d), and ingredients restricted or banned in other jurisdictions, among others.
