These energy- and resource-intensive, polluting facilities contribute to environmental, health, and economic burdens for communities of color and low-income. These actions extend our dependence on fossil fuels, adding to increasing climate-driven extreme disasters and weather, and undermine the necessary transition to safer, more affordable renewable energy.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>"},{"title":"Water Consumption and Contamination","open":false,"html":"<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data centers require extensive cooling to avoid overheating infrastructure: \u201cEven a mid-sized data center consumes as much water as a small town, while larger ones require<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincolninst.edu\/publications\/land-lines-magazine\/articles\/land-water-impacts-data-centers\/\"> <b>up to 5 million gallons of water every day\u2014as much as a city of 50,000 people.\u201d<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cooling and fire suppressant equipment used by data centers use PFAS or \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d which contaminate waterways and are linked to a number of health conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/data-centers-are-contributing-to-pfas-forever-chemical-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturing processes for the PFAS components of data centers <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been documented as releasing the chemicals into drinking water.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>"},{"title":"Noise Pollution","open":false,"html":"<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cc-techgroup.com\/data-center-noise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noise from data centers comes from multiple sources such as servers, equipment, cooling systems, and generators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These noises, often described as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/11\/data-centers-ai-electricity-%20virginia-00815219\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201chigh-pitch whine\u201d ranging from 55 to 85 dbA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can cause disturbed sleep, hearing problems, and an overall harm to quality of life for humans and wildlife alike.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>"},{"title":"Lack of Transparency","open":false,"html":"<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many data center developers enter nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) with local governments that prevent communities from knowing what is going on in their own neighborhoods.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Virginia, a data center hotspot, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/virginiamercury.com\/2025\/04\/30\/data-centers-non-disclosure-agreements-and-democracy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 of 31 localities utilized NDAs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
