Twelve percent of the children born in the state in 2019 \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/valueofleadprevention.org\/calculations.php?state=New%20York\">28,820 children<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 were diagnosed with elevated blood lead levels. Childhood lead poisoning rates for communities across New York State are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/usa-lead-newyork\/\">five to six times higher<\/a>\u00a0than those in Flint, MI at the peak of its water crisis. And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nashp.org\/infographic-policy-levers-to-address-health-equity-by-reducing-lead-exposure\/\">studies show<\/a>\u00a0that Black children are three-times more likely to have elevated blood lead levels than white children.\r\n\r\nBut childhood lead poisoning is completely preventable. Tragically it produces life-long impacts, which include permanent neurological disorders, kidney and hearing damage, and concentration problems as well as lower IQs.\r\n\r\nIn New York City, we helped pass Local Law 1 of 2004, the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Act, which requires landlords to proactively find and safely fix lead-based paint hazards in older residential buildings. Unfortunately, though, the City has never adequately enforced this law.\r\n\r\nIn 2026, we worked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/welcometocup.org\/projects\/chipping-away-at-lead\">Center for Urban Pedagogy<\/a>, along with our allies and community members, to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Chipping-Away-at-Lead_Final-Digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Chipping Away at Lead<\/em><\/a>, a bilingual resource for tenants to help identify lead hazards in their home as well as hold their landlords accountable. <a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Chipping-Away-at-Lead_Final-Digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Download<\/strong><\/a>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Chipping-Away-at-Lead_Final-Digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6341 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Chipping-Away-at-Lead-cover-231x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;","include_drop_cap":false}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.1 -
