These included rules to curb <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/biden-harris-administration-finalizes-standards-slash-methane-pollution-combat-climate#:~:text=EPA%27s%20final%20rule%20leverages%20the,the%20power%20sector%20in%202021.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methane emissions <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from oil and gas operations, mercury<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/biden-harris-administration-finalizes-suite-standards-reduce-pollution-fossil-fuel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other toxic air pollutants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from coal-fired power plants, as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/biden-harris-administration-finalizes-suite-standards-reduce-pollution-fossil-fuel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greenhouse gases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from existing coal and new gas plants. The cohort advocated successfully to strengthen these rules, especially the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weact.org\/2024\/07\/national-clean-air-for-the-long-haul-commends-the-administration-for-taking-key-actions-to-limit-methane-pollution-from-oil-and-gas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weact.org\/2023\/04\/national-clean-air-for-the-long-haul-coalition-commends-epa-for-largest-update-to-mercury-and-air-toxics-standards-in-over-a-decade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mercury and air toxic standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, calling on the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and toxic pollution from fossil-fuel fired power plants that disproportionately harm environmental justice communities. In response, CAFLH released the following statement:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe SCOTUS decisions this month ensure that the EPA rules, challenged by industry and states, remain on track and the Agency is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/supreme-court-leaves-in-place-two-epa-regulations-curbing-methane-and-mercury-emissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018squarely within its legal responsibilities and would protect the public.\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For example, the EPA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/biden-harris-administration-finalizes-standards-slash-methane-pollution-combat-climate#:~:text=EPA%27s%20final%20rule%20leverages%20the,the%20power%20sector%20in%202021.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">projects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the methane rule would not only prevent 58 million tons of the potent climate pollutant from 2024 &#8211; 2038 but will also cut volatile organic compounds which will have long-lasting benefits for public health such as avoiding up to 97,000 cases of asthma symptoms. While, the mercury and air toxics standards are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/biden-harris-administration-finalizes-suite-standards-reduce-pollution-fossil-fuel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to result in significant emissions reductions in hazardous air pollutants like mercury, arsenic, lead, and fine particulates as well as carbon pollution, realizing millions in both health and climate benefits between 2028 &#8211; 2037.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the current composition and voting record of the Supreme Court, we have lost many vital protections as a nation. These recent rulings, however, are encouraging and emphasize how clear cut the need for these regulations are, particularly for environmental justice communities who have carried a greater burden and have lost generations of thinkers, leaders, friends,\u00a0 family, and children due to the health, climate, environmental, and safety harms from the fossil fuel industry. We will continue to focus our efforts on defending these rules as litigation progresses in the D.C. Circuit. We will also work to ensure that the EPA implements and enforces them to safeguard our communities, our climate, and our futures.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\r\n<p># # #<\/p>\r\n<p><b>Clean Air For The Long Haul <\/b>is\u00a0a nationwide coalition of environmental justice groups working together to win major federal emissions reductions in the power and transportation sectors.
