{"id":3818,"date":"2023-06-19T10:49:37","date_gmt":"2023-06-19T14:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/juneteenth-2023-a-call-to-action\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T13:44:46","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T17:44:46","slug":"juneteenth-2023-a-call-to-action","status":"publish","type":"update","link":"https:\/\/weact.org\/es\/updates\/juneteenth-2023-a-call-to-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Juneteenth 2023: A Call to Action"},"template":"","class_list":["post-3818","update","type-update","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","update_type-blog","person_tax-chris-dobens"],"acf":{"details":{"":null,"featured_image":1148,"update_type":[364],"focus_area":false,"authors":[230],"abstract":""},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years ago, we commemorated Juneteenth with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weact.org\/2021\/06\/juneteenth-2021-celebrate-with-a-vote\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a blog post urging you to celebrate the day with a vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since then, our right to vote has remained under an escalating, even bolder attack.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juneteenth is meant to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2023\/06\/15\/juneteenth-federal-holiday-history-celebrations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a celebration of the end of slavery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people throughout the Confederacy in 1863, states still under Confederate control refused to abide by it.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas was one of those states, and remained the last holdout \u2013 for nearly two and a half years. The change came when Union troops arrived and their commander, U.S. Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, issued General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, which informed the people of Texas that all enslaved people \u2013 more than 250,000 souls \u2013 were now free.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, June 19th became Juneteenth, recognized as the true Emancipation Day, celebrating not only freedom but the ongoing fight to protect it. But m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ore than 150 years later, the shackles of systemic racism are still holding us down. And the widespread effort to keep people of color from the ballot box is one of the most effective tools of our oppressors.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is hope, though. The U.S. Supreme Court <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/supreme-court-rules-alabamas-congressional-maps-violate-voting\/story?id=99239247\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently ruled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Alabama\u2019s attempt to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/gerrymandering-explained\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gerrymander<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Black voters into a single congressional district \u2013 despite the fact that they account for more than 25 percent of the state\u2019s population \u2013 was indeed a violation of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/voting-rights-act\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting Rights Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that Alabama will have to redraw its district maps, ensuring that Black voters have an opportunity to elect someone to Congress who adequately and effectively represents their needs and interests. And with similar cases being fought in Georgia, Louisiana, and other states, these decisions could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/supreme-court-voting-rights-redistricting-implications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help reshape Congress in the 2024 election<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the key phrase here is <\/span>Black voters<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While there was a clear improvement in turnout among voters of color in the 2020 election, the percentage of people of color who voted (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/large-racial-turnout-gap-persisted-2020-election#:~:text=As%20the%20graph%20below%20shows,turnout%20for%20voters%20of%20color.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">58 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) still trails the percentage of whites who voted (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/large-racial-turnout-gap-persisted-2020-election#:~:text=As%20the%20graph%20below%20shows,turnout%20for%20voters%20of%20color.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">71 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) by a significant margin. We need to close that gap to ensure that we elect a government that truly represents us, as opposed to a government that continues to oppress us.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>Act Now<\/b>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early voting is underway here in New York City, and runs through Sunday, June 25th, 2023. The Primary Election is a critical opportunity to elect the best possible candidates for the General Election in November 2023. While not every district has a City Council candidate on the ballot, many do, and every ballot has judicial candidates on them.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting is your right, one that generations before us fought for throughout the Civil Rights movement and beyond. And we think it is also your duty. At WE ACT, we work hard to advocate for environmental justice, but much of our success depends on who you send to City Hall, Albany, and Washington, DC. We need leaders who understand the burdens of environmental racism and are committed to pursuing justice-based solutions.
