Gas facilities and infrastructure are consistently sited in low-income communities, communities of color, and Indigenous and tribal lands resulting in a disproportionate cumulative impact of pollution and the associated health burdens for residents of these communities, including asthma, lung and cardiovascular disease, cancer, preterm births, and premature deaths. These same communities are also the hardest hit by climate change, which is caused by the emissions from fossil fuel production and use.<\/p>\n
That is why WE ACT for Environmental Justice and more than 40 other organizations representing these communities sent a letter to President Joe Biden, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Richard Glick on March 15, 2022 calling for the immediate halt of liquified natural gas (LNG) exports, the embedding climate and environmental justice in environmental and public interest reviews of LNG production and infrastructure projects, the acceleration of renewable energy development and storage, and the expansion and increase of federal funding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and Weatherization Assistance Program.
