{"id":4109,"date":"2020-01-29T12:11:16","date_gmt":"2020-01-29T17:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/electric-buses-come-to-harlem\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T19:44:21","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T00:44:21","slug":"electric-buses-come-to-harlem","status":"publish","type":"update","link":"https:\/\/weact.org\/es\/updates\/electric-buses-come-to-harlem\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric Buses Come to Harlem"},"template":"","class_list":["post-4109","update","type-update","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","update_type-press-release","person_tax-cecil-corbin-mark"],"acf":{"details":{"":null,"featured_image":5221,"update_type":[366],"focus_area":false,"authors":[171],"abstract":""},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Next Stop: No Asthma<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<br \/>\r\n<\/strong>January 29, 2020<br \/>\r\nContact: Chris Dobens, 212-961-1000 ext. 320, <a href=\"mailto:chris@weact.org\">chris@weact.org<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>HARLEM, NY<\/strong> \u2014 The New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the expansion of its electric bus program, showcasing its new electric articulated buses that will be operating on the M60 SBS route traveling south on Broadway from 106th Street and across 125th Street \u2013 a major truck route and one of the city\u2019s most heavily trafficked thoroughfares \u2013 over to Astoria.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cWe celebrate the MTA\u2019s shift to electric buses, and are particularly pleased that they have chosen Harlem\u2019s 125th Street as one of the first routes,\u201d said Cecil Corbin-Mark, Deputy Director &amp; Director of Policy Initiatives at WE ACT for Environmental Justice (WE ACT). \u201cTransportation is New York City\u2019s second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and for far too long our community has had to bear a disproportionate amount of air pollution from buses, with six of the MTA\u2019s seven Manhattan bus depots located north of 100th Street. This has had major health impacts for our community, with the six neighborhoods suffering from the highest rates of asthma in Manhattan also being located north of 100th Street. Our Dirty Diesel campaign successfully addressed that by convincing the MTA to switch to clean-fuel buses, retrofit its depots, and abide by the City\u2019s idling laws \u2013 all of which helped reduce tailpipe emissions by 95 percent citywide. And now, by starting to shift the fleet from clean-fuel to electric buses, the MTA is going to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions \u2013 which should not only help reduce air pollution and lower asthma rates in our community, but will also help reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and address the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>WE ACT launched its \u201cDirty Diesel\u201d campaign in May 1997 to address the air pollution and asthma rates in Northern Manhattan. This public awareness campaign was instrumental in convincing the MTA to switch to alternative fuel vehicles and invest in pollution control retrofits for its entire bus fleet in 2002.<\/p>\r\n<p>Corbin-Mark spoke at the MTA\u2019s press conference announcing the move.
