The City\u2019s Department of Health will now conduct environmental investigations for all children under 18 years old with a blood lead level of 5 micrograms per deciliter.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, the announcement of this new initiative coincides with the release of a report by the City\u2019s Department of Health acknowledging that 820 children younger than 6 years old had elevated levels of lead \u2013 between 5 to 9 micrograms per deciliter \u2013 in their blood between 2012 and 2016. All of the children lived in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) public housing. And these are levels at which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that authorities intervene with testing and other measures.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cWe have long been vocal advocates for more stringent lead poisoning policies in NYCHA buildings,\u201d said Peggy Shepard, Co-Founder and Executive Director of WE ACT for Environmental Justice. \u201cAnd while we are pleased that the City has finally heeded the call to protect New York\u2019s children from this ongoing and unnecessary health hazard, it is disappointing that 820 children had to have their lives placed in jeopardy before action was taken.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>WE ACT was instrumental in helping pass <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/nyc-resources\/service\/1952\/lead-law-guide\">Local Law 1<\/a> in 2004, which was designed to make the City lead-free by 2010. The law requires landlords to remove all lead from an apartment after it has been vacated. But a lack of enforcement has continued to put the lives of countless children across the city in jeopardy.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cIt is unfortunate that the City and its Department of Health have opted to focus on legislation aimed at monitoring and treating lead poisoning when they simply could enforce the existing law and prevent the contamination from happening in the first place,\u201d added Shepard.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"># # #<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>WE ACT for Environmental Justice<\/strong>\u00a0is a Northern Manhattan membership-based organization whose mission is to build healthy communities by ensuring that people of color and\/or low income residents participate meaningfully in the creation of sound and fair environmental health and protection policies and practices.
