Lee Zeldin nominated as next Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) showcased the risk his appointment poses for millions across the country, especially those living in environmental justice communities. The EPA plays an essential role in protecting human health and the environment, supported <\/span>by the vast majority of Americans<\/span><\/a> across ideologies and identities. When led by an Administrator who abides by the law and is accountable to the needs of Americans, the EPA has reduced illness, disease, climate and healthcare costs, as well as environmental destruction <\/span>with profound, clear, and measurable effects<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn contrast, the appointment of Zeldin - <\/span>who has voted in favor of pollution and against vital environmental, health, and clean energy jobs investments <\/span><\/a>- shows a clear disregard by the Trump Administration for our well-being and future. <\/span>As a New York-based organization, we are concerned by his past congressional record, and promises to expand fossil fuel projects driving the climate crisis. The climate crisis is already devastating coastal cities like New York with severe heat, storms, and flooding - including Zeldin\u2019s former district. <\/span>Likewise, disregard by the Trump Administration is further underscored by the nominations for <\/span>agency and cabinet positions of those who are unqualified and anti-science, anti-climate, and anti-public health policy<\/span><\/a>. In response, Leslie Fields, Chief Federal Officer at WE ACT for Environmental Justice shared the following:\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cThe confirmation of former Rep. Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency could result in dire consequences for millions of Americans. The work of the EPA is to ensure our fundamental rights are maintained, including access to clean air, water, and land. These protections have been one of the only ways to reduce the pollution burdens facing environmental justice communities enduring disproportionate illness and premature death. Should Zeldin be appointed to the highest level at the EPA, it sends a message by the Trump Administration that polluting industries be prioritized over the well-being of Americans, and particularly those most burdened - including Black, Brown, and low-income communities.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\"If confirmed, Lee Zeldin must uphold environmental, civil rights, and public health laws as part of his responsibility as Administrator of the EPA.
