Kennedy Jr., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/01\/health\/staff-cuts-at-federal-health-agencies-have-begun\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegally fired thousands of vital federal employees,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including the entire staff overseeing the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/help-with-energy-bills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIHEAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an urgently needed, bipartisan, federally-funded and state-implemented program that provides funds to help millions of people across the country struggling with increasing heating and cooling bills.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With summer approaching, people of color and low-income must brace for an alarming rise in extreme heat and unpredictable weather patterns driven by the climate crisis. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/hazstat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme heat is the deadliest form of unnatural weather in the U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it kills more people each year than floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes combined. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rate is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weact.org\/campaigns\/heat-health-equity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much higher in low-income communities and communities of color<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as these groups are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9363288\/#:~:text=Multiple%20studies%20of%20heat%2C%20extreme,is%20not%20always%20the%20case.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most susceptible to the impacts of climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, in New York City, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/epi\/datatable47.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the heat-related deaths are among Black\/African American people, even though they make up only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/newyorkcitynewyork\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the city\u2019s population.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removing LIHEAP staff puts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/02\/climate\/trump-layoffs-energy-assistance-liheap.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.2 million people at risk nationwide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liheappm.acf.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/private\/congress\/profiles\/2023\/FY2023NewYorkProfile-508Compliant.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 1.1 million households in New York State<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, energy bills continue to climb year after year, putting an even greater strain on households. In New York State, for example, energy affordability has hit a crisis level, with 1.4 million New Yorkers struggling to pay their energy bills in 2024. This action by the administration to gut a vital energy relief program that has provided support for half a century creates an unprecedented challenge for our communities, and erodes decades of hard-earned progress.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weact.org\/publications\/liheap-2024-brief\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by WE ACT for Environmental Justice and NRDC underscores that LIHEAP works, but is underfunded. In 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liheappm.acf.hhs.gov\/datawarehouse\/custom_reports\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIHEAP prevented energy service loss for 1.7 million homes, and restored service to almost 250,000 more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, because of limited funding, the program runs out earlier each year due to overwhelming demand. Over the past three summers, New York State has run out of funds as early as July.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This mass firing also comes right as Senator Edward Markey (D-MA) and Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) reintroduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markey.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sen-markey-rep-ansari-introduce-legislation-to-help-families-pay-their-heating-and-cooling-bills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Heating and Cooling Relief Act this week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to significantly expand and modernize LIHEAP. As shared by Sen. Markey and Rep. Ansari, the program needs more - not less - support as less than<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liheappm.acf.hhs.gov\/datawarehouse\/custom_reports\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 20 percent of eligible households currently receive LIHEAP assistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and low-income families spend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/energy\/low-income-renter-energy-efficiency-toolkit#:~:text=According%20to%20DOE%27s%20Low%2DIncome,be%20as%20high%20as%2030%25.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three times more on energy bills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, with the entire staff that oversee this program fired, experts believe that the remaining millions in funds may not be distributed, putting immense financial strain on and increasing the deadly risks for our communities.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach year brings unprecedented extreme heat and severe weather events, marking a historic turning point in our climate. It is imperative that our government confronts this harsh reality and prioritizes the needs of all its people, particularly those living in overburdened communities,\" said Yuwa Vosper, Federal Policy Manager at WE ACT for Environmental Justice.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"The recent decision to terminate the staff of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program at HHS is especially detrimental as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/wholesale-power-prices-rise-2025-regions-natural-gas\/738463\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy costs spike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the country. These terminations undermine a vital, underfunded, bipartisan program that provides essential support for millions. The LIHEAP program plays a crucial role in addressing financial strain and health risks low-income families face. Such an act of dismissal is a direct threat to the well-being of countless individuals across the U.S., many of whom will suffer from preventable heat exposure\u2014especially among low-income communities and people of color.\"<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn New York City alone, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/a816-dohbesp.nyc.gov\/IndicatorPublic\/data-features\/heat-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an average of 350 lives were lost annually due to heat-related issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2013 to 2022, highlighting the urgent need for reliable access to heating and cooling support. Access to these essential resources is not a privilege but an undeniable right.
