By slashing permitting review timelines and shutting the public out of decision-making, the administration is trampling over our rights and creating an <\/span>open-season policy for polluting fossil fuels, mining, and other sources<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>According to <\/span>Title I of NEPA<\/span><\/a>, we the people have the power to protect ourselves and our environment, and we will not let that power be taken away.<\/span>\r\n\r\nRemoving guardrails from the process of reviewing these projects threatens already overburdened communities. <\/span>Black, Brown, Indigenous, and low-income communities have lived with the unfair and overwhelming majority of fossil fuel pollution and extractive industries for decades<\/span><\/a> \u2014breathing dirty air, drinking contaminated water, and dealing with industrial disasters causing cancer, asthma, heart-disease, and premature death. The administration\u2019s move is not only dangerous for everyone, especially environmental justice communities\u2014it\u2019s illegal.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n
\u201cNEPA requires the government to seek out the public, supporting the right of our communities to speak up in response to damaging projects. <\/span>T<\/span>he administration\u2019s effort to ignore legal obligations under NEPA will drive a reckless free-for-all of polluting projects releasing toxic waste and hazardous particles into our air, water, land, and bodies, while also attempting to silence the very people most affected. This is unacceptable, as 46% of Americans already live in places with unhealthy levels of air pollution, and 78 million people of color live in counties with at least one failing grade, according to the American Lung Association\u2019s <\/span>latest study<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThis action by Trump\u2019s DOI, in combination with <\/span>removing the Council on Environmental Quality\u2019s (CEQ)<\/span><\/a> ability to make sure NEPA processes are protected, will only cause serious harm to people and the environments we depend on<\/a>, <\/span>more legal battles<\/span><\/a>, confusion, and delays.<\/span> We deserve and need a government that creates a permitting process that involves the public meaningfully; protects our environments; moves us to zero-polluting, affordable energy sources; and benefits everyone, without hurting the most vulnerable.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe real \u201cemergency\u201d we need to address is the administration\u2019s willingness to sacrifice our health and environments for the fossil fuel industry\u2019s profits. We will hold the line against these unjust actions. NEPA is the people\u2019s environmental law, and we will not allow corporate interests to claw away protections meant to safeguard communities and our health.
