Titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy, Economic, and Environmental Assessment of U.S. LNG Exports, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this assessment was a landmark analysis of the risks of unfettered LNG exports that followed in the footsteps of the Biden administration\u2019s decision to pause new export authorizations in January of 2024.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trump administration has already begun greenlighting new LNG projects in spite of public opposition. With today\u2019s release, they have also ignored the warnings of the 2024 analysis, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-12\/Statement%20from%20U.S.%20Secretary%20of%20Energy%20Jennifer%20M.%20Granholm%20on%20Updated%20Final%20Analyses_12.17.2024.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which concluded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are enough LNG exports already approved to meet global demand for decades to come;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfettered exports of LNG will increase wholesale domestic natural gas prices by over 30 percent;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG facilities tend to be concentrated in communities overburdened with petrochemical pollution;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing LNG exports threatens our ability to meet our global commitment of limiting warming to 1.5\u00baC and would displace more renewables than coal globally.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the public comment period on this analysis, which lasted from January to April of 2025, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vvfnd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/VVF-Comment-Letter-2-13-2025.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ieefa.org\/resources\/ieefa-comments-doe-lng-export-terminals-and-permitting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economic experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-01\/final-doe-final-studies-org-letter.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 150 frontline and national organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/merkley-reed-grijalva-huffman-casten-to-energy-secretary-wright-new-lng-exports-hurt-american-households-and-businesses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">members of Congress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and more than 156,000 Americans, all urged the Trump administration to reconsider the approval of more LNG exports, highlighting the harms they would have on frontline communities, the climate, and energy costs.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of listening to that broad array of voices, the DOE\u2019s new response ignores the facts on record to make a case for expediting LNG exports in spite of their dramatic costs.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNG exports in the United States have rapidly increased in recent years, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/reports\/permit-to-kill\/#:~:text=Direct%20air%20pollution%20from%20currently,total%20health%20costs%20per%20year.&amp;text=If%20all%20the%20planned%20terminals,in%20health%20costs%20per%20year.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harming public health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collaborative.evergreenaction.com\/press\/new-report-the-climate-costs-of-americas-lng-exports\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devastating the environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/news\/lng-exports-help-drive-52-increase-in-natural-gas-prices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raising prices for families<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vvfnd.org\/press-releases\/national-security-experts-former-senior-military-leaders-back-biden-administrations-pause-on-new-lng-export-licenses-urge-congress-to-increase-scrutiny-of-industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatening national security<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Peer-reviewed research indicates that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scijournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ese3.1934\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the climate impact of LNG is even greater than coal. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, the oil and gas industry is seeking to build on its record profits by rapidly increasing the US\u2019s LNG export capacity \u2013 even as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ieefa.org\/articles\/eu-combined-gas-and-lng-imports-fall-due-reduced-demand\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demand drops in Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americansecurityproject.org\/security-implications-of-bidens-liquified-natural-gas-pause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">security concerns rise around exports via China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>In response, advocacy leaders issued the following statements:\u00a0<\/b>\r\n\r\n<b>NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) Senior Attorney Caroline Reiser: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe facts are clear - expanding U.S. LNG exports benefits billionaire oil executives, not the American public. Greenlighting reckless LNG extraction and exportation will raise domestic energy prices, pollute American communities, and fuel the global climate crisis.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>Sierra Club Beyond Fossil Fuels Policy Director Mahyar Sorour: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe studies released under the Biden administration clearly showed what we already knew about the harms of LNG exports. This response from the Trump administration follows the closing of a public comment period in which the fossil fuel industry has attempted to re-write the critical, unbiased findings from the original report. No matter how hard they try to hide it, Trump\u2019s DOE can not bury the truth that increased LNG exports are simply not in the public interest. The facts are clear, LNG exports raise costs to Americans\u2019 energy bills, are disastrous for frontline communities, increase public health harms, and perpetuate the climate crisis. Big Oil and Gas CEOs are the only beneficiaries of a rubberstamp for LNG projects.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>Friends of the Earth U.S. Senior Energy Campaigner Raena Garcia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThe Biden Administration\u2019s Department of Energy study confirmed that the Trump Administration\u2019s agenda to supercharge LNG exports will come at the expense of consumers and the climate. We cannot afford to ignore these findings and haphazardly greenlight LNG exports to prop up an industry that continues to threaten our people and the planet for profit. Glossing over the concerns that a hundred thousand people have, including scientists, policy experts, activists and concerned citizens, is not in the public's best interest.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>WE ACT for Environmental Justice Director of Federal Policy Anastasia Gordon:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt is more important than ever that we acknowledge the facts of the 2024 study: LNG exports add costs to people across the U.S. already struggling with energy bills, and continue to disproportionately pollute communities of color and lower-income. LNG expansion is not in the public interest. The Trump administration's Department of Energy's attempt to rewrite reality and neglect hundreds of thousands of public comments in opposition to LNG does not conceal the truth. Creating further excessive pollution and cost burden while also growing unhealthy industries that fuel unnatural disasters in our communities is a violation of our rights to protect our health, our families, and our future.\"<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>Public Citizen\u2019s Energy Program Director Tyson Slocum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cThe Department of Energy\u2019s December 2024 exhaustive study documenting that expanding LNG exports will expose American families to higher energy price burdens remains intact, as Trump has failed to effectively challenge the facts.
