Clean Air for the Long Haul strongly opposes the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to weaken the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/stationary-sources-air-pollution\/final-rule-national-emission-standards-hazardous-air-pollutants-0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mercury and air toxics standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and repeal the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/stationary-sources-air-pollution\/greenhouse-gas-standards-and-guidelines-fossil-fuel-fired-power\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon power plant regulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, warning that such rollbacks perpetuate environmental injustice, prioritizing polluters and their profits over people and public health.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cohort fought hard to strengthen and finalize these rules to bring critical climate and public benefits to environmental justice communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis and disproportionately burdened by deadly pollution from the power sector. While Clean Air for the Long Haul <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/clean-air-for-the-long-haul-statement-on-final-epa-power-plant-rules\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not fully agree<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the approach of the carbon standards, this does not negate EPA\u2019s authority to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/power-sector\/human-health-environmental-impacts-electric-power-sector\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protect public health and mitigate the climate crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for vulnerable populations. The power sector remains a major source of mercury, hazardous air pollutants, and greenhouse gas emissions, making strong regulations essential to safeguarding our communities. The EPA\u2019s claim that power sector greenhouse gas emissions \u201cdo not contribute significantly\u201d to climate change is undermined by its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/electric-power-sector-emissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">own data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing power plants account for a quarter of all US greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is that people of color and low-income across the country have been treated as sacrifice zones by the fossil fuel industry for far too long. Rolling back these standards would only deepen environmental injustices, exposing our communities to even greater risks of asthma, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Everyone has a right to have access to clean air, land, and water. We will continue to hold the EPA accountable to its mission of protecting human health and the environment to keep our communities safe and preserve our future.<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"># # #<\/span><\/p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weact.org\/campaigns\/dare-to-breathe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean Air For The Long Haul<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a nationwide cohort of environmental justice groups, coordinates federal rulemaking campaigns, centering overburdened communities, to reduce air pollution from power plants, cars, and trucks. The coalition seeks to catalyze the environmental justice movement through federal emissions reductions targeting United States power and transportation sectors.
