New Tools Show How Trump EPA Funding Cuts Harms Communities<\/h2>\r\nInteractive maps and stories show local impacts and lived experiences of communities affected by clawbacks of federal investments <\/span><\/i>\r\n\r\nWASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 16, 2025) \u2013 Two companion maps published today \u2013 <\/span>the <\/span>narrative Stolen Futures StoryMap<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>data-rich Stolen Futures Grants Dashboard<\/span><\/a> \u2013 show how the Trump administration\u2019s funding cuts are harming communities across the nation. Stolen Futures maps spotlight communities relying upon $37 billion in promised grants from twelve congressionally mandated programs at the Environmental Protection Agency. So far, $29 billion of grants have been unlawfully cancelled or frozen, and the fate of billions of dollars more is uncertain or at risk. <\/span>These unlawful terminations cut off communities nationwide from critical projects to clean up contaminated sites, improve air and water quality, and provide health services.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cWe spent years developing recommendations so investments would actually reach those most burdened,\u201d said Peggy Shepard, Co-Founder and Executive Director of <\/span>WE ACT for Environmental Justice<\/span><\/a>. \u201cListening to communities isn\u2019t optional; it\u2019s the only way these dollars deliver real benefits.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\nWE ACT and NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) developed <\/span>Stolen Futures<\/span><\/i> by examining 910 federal grants and sub-grants and <\/span>interviewing impacted organizations <\/span><\/a>from across the country.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cThis [Justice40 and WHEJAC] was the first time I felt they were actually listening. Finally our issues were being heard, about the environment, racism, and violence,\u201d said Vi Wagihi, Environmental Health and Justice Program Director of Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT) \u201cThe funding was introduced to end the erosion of our communities, places that don\u2019t have the infrastructure and it\u2019s a dire need.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nUrgent funds at risk or canceled spanned both red and blue states.
