As Toni Morrison shared in<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Beloved<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \"Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.\"<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we celebrate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/explore\/stories\/historical-legacy-juneteenth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juneteenth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in commemoration of the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas aiming to end slavery in the U.S., we also must reckon with how far we\u2019ve actually come, and how we define ourselves as a country. What does Juneteenth in 2026 mean in the same year of the 250th anniversary of \u201cAmerica, with liberty and justice for all,\u201d while voting rights for millions of people of color <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/in-response-to-regressive-voting-rights-act-supreme-court-decision-we-act-committed-to-fighting-for-our-democracy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are being taken away<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? How do we celebrate freedom in the wake of the Trump administration\u2019s year of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/daretobreathe.org\/latest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health and environmental protections rollbacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will add even more pollution in communities of color, leading to decades of asthma, cancer, and death? We are living through a unique time. Pressure for change is building, and there is a rising hunger to create something that actually makes life better for all of us.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h4><b>These attacks are fuel to reimagine our country and achieve \u201cliberty and justice for all.\u201d Environmental justice can lead the way.\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/about\/what-is-ej\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may not be a term everyone knows, but it knows everyone. That\u2019s because it addresses everything we need to live well in our environments, including making sure everyone has access to clean air, water, and land. It also directly addresses a legacy of discrimination in the U.S. that shapes current disparities. Environmental justice delivers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2026-Policy-Agenda-Digital-Version.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accountability and solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to tackle the overexposure of people of color and communities of low income to pollution, as well as related health harms and generations of underinvestment.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_3289\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"872\"]<img class=\"wp-image-3289 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Peggy-Chuck-Sewage-7-1988.jpg\" alt=\"Peggy and Chuck Protest in 1988\" width=\"872\" height=\"579\" \/> <em>1988: On January 15th, \u201cThe Sewage Seven\u201d \u2013 then West Harlem Democratic District Leaders Peggy Shepard and Chuck Sutton, and allies were arrested for holding up traffic on the West Side Highway to call attention to the North River Sewage Treatment Plant\u2019s pollution.<\/em>[\/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year also marks the 35th anniversary of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ejforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ejlf-summit-2024-program-2.1.pdf?t=1781128048\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Justice Principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, drafted and adopted at the groundbreaking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucc.org\/30th-anniversary-the-first-national-people-of-color-environmental-leadership-summit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These principles continue to be more relevant than ever in the fight for freedom. Among them are concepts like \u201cpublic policy [should] be based on mutual respect and justice for all peoples, free from any form of discrimination or bias,\u201d and \u201caffirming the fundamental right to political, economic, cultural and environmental self-determination of all peoples.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span>\r\n<h4><b>Now is the time to put environmental justice principles into action in order to accelerate a shared movement that uses our fights for justice as part of the same story.<\/b><b>\r\n<\/b><\/h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To light that spark, we have to take a hard look at the dark reality of the present. Our rights are no longer being chipped away at, they\u2019re being sledgehammered. Over the last year of Trump 2.0, we saw a major blow with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/after-louisiana-v-callais-heres-proof-just-how-bad-voting-rights-america\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Supreme Court destroying Section Two of the Voting Rights Act of 1965<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This section stopped the redistricting of maps that discriminate on the basis of race, color, or language minority status. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/in-response-to-regressive-voting-rights-act-supreme-court-decision-we-act-committed-to-fighting-for-our-democracy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting Rights Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was enacted due to the years of blood and lives lost fighting against vicious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/freedom-riders-jim-crow-laws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racial Jim Crow segregation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We are seeing a betrayal of those who fought for those rights in pursuit of a fair and democratic system, and an erosion of the fundamental right of people to elect their own representatives.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_5796\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"2048\"]<img class=\"wp-image-5796 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_0145.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" \/> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ejforum.org\">Environmental Justice Leadership Forum<\/a> (hosted by WE ACT) members on Capitol Hill November 2025 advocating for environmental justice policies, investments, and staff to be restored and protected.<\/em>[\/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are also seeing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/zeldins-epa-rollbacks-are-dagger-straight-into-the-heart-of-vulnerable-people-and-sell-out-to-polluters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most unprecedented rollbacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to health and environmental protections of the last 50 years. Communities of color and low-income will face the greatest consequences from the Trump administration\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/rewriting-the-rules-to-pollute\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wholesale destruction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of environmental bedrock laws and regulations, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s (EPA) repeal of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earthjustice.org\/press\/2026\/environmental-groups-sue-epa-for-illegal-repeal-of-climate-protections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endangerment Finding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mass funding cuts, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wastedive.com\/news\/a-year-after-ejscreen-shut-down-researchers-envision-better-tools\/818552\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss of scientific data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and experts. The gutting of the Voting Rights Act harms the same communities. Communities in Louisiana suffering from environmental racism in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dscej.org\/project\/surviving-cancer-alley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCancer Alley\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also struggle under white supremacist voting discrimination.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When communities cannot elect their representatives, they will not have equitable laws and policies to address and enforce against environmental pollution in their communities. These communities who are disproportionately burdened by pollution (due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/10\/1085882933\/redlining-pollution-racism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discriminatory siting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) will continue to suffer poor health, economic, educational, and social outcomes made worse by the climate crisis. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blackvotersmatterfund.org\/louisiana-v-callais\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Voters Matter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Republican legislatures in 10 Southern states could redraw maps to wipe out 191 state seats held by Black lawmakers in majority-minority districts. This advances the Trump administration\u2019s ongoing denial of Black and Latinx communities\u2019 constitutional right to participate in the democratic process.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injustice does not act in isolation. We\u2019ve also seen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/harmful-trump-rescissions-and-executive-orders-target-environmental-justice-communities-vulnerable-groups\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attacks on the rights of immigrant communities, free speech, and LGBTQIA+ rights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When these hammers come down, they have a ripple effect that spurs further injustice. With the Trump administration consistently tipping the scales in favor of polluting industries, self-interested billionaires, and prejudiced groups, even the leaders who claimed to want better are bowing down to Trump's pressure. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/we-act-statement-on-new-york-state-governor-kathy-hochuls-climate-law-rollbacks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Hochul\u2019s hollowing out of New York State\u2019s climate law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a proof point, taking the state from leading the nation forward to backsliding on affordable, clean energy.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trump administration and allied efforts to smash our democracy and upend health and environmental protections reveal something crucial: Our movements to defend our rights are being attacked because they are effective, and most importantly, they\u2019re interconnected. Our power can be unleashed when we unify our efforts. Fair representation and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/daretobreathe.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean\u2011air protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are deeply connected; when pollution harms our health, it also harms our ability to organize, vote, and be heard. Community organizing to protect our neighborhoods against the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ejforum.org\/data-centers-environmental-justice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buildout of data centers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the same as efforts to stop climate pollution, because data centers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ejforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Data-Centers-Issue-Brief_EJLF-Branding-2026-1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drive more fossil fuel emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that leads to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/c5246231c19f4842a8999fe8d448be84\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losing our homes and lives to climate-driven disasters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many of the challenges we face as a society and in our everyday life can be resolved through environmental justice; from making <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/why-energy-costs-are-exploding-and-how-we-build-a-future-where-every-community-thrives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our energy bills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more affordable and reducing exposure to indoor air pollution, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/24da03f61b7341aa9473e50098f37a83\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventing toxic facilities from ending up in our backyards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and safeguarding our right to vote.<\/span>\r\n<h4><b>Environmental justice is built on the idea that when we create policies that support and protect the most vulnerable, we all benefit.<\/b><b>\r\n<\/b><\/h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/daily.jstor.org\/annotations-the-combahee-river-collective-statement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combahee River Collective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expressed, \u201cIf Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.\u201d The work we do next must be focused on shared freedom, removing the separations between our efforts, and leaving no room for gaps that give any future administration and their interests a chance to rupture our progress.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vision for this combined movement for freedom is already here in so many ways. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/919\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Justice for All Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-led by the late Representatives Donald McEachin (D-Va.) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/we-act-for-environmental-justice-honors-representative-raul-grijalvas-legacy-and-commitment-to-environmental-justice-for-all\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ra\u00fal Grijalva (D-Ariz.)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a piece of legislation that was crafted through a deeply participatory, nation-wide, community-led process, and its design inherently combines civil rights and environmental justice. It ties efforts to expand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/fcs\/TitleVI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prohibit federal activities from causing disparate impacts on the basis of race, color, or national origin with environmental justice requirements, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/opinion\/states-cities-environmental-justice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cumulative impacts protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and advisory groups to make sure that we all can live in health and safety. Moving this legislation forward in tandem with both the Senate and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/grassroots-coalitions-celebrate-new-house-environmental-justice-caucus-led-by-rep-grijalva-lee-tlaib\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new House Environmental Justice Caucuses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help make sure that people - not polluters - are shaping policies that benefit everyone.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_6033\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]<img class=\"wp-image-6033 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ZxVqRCwg-1024x717.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" \/> <em>Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (PA-12), Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), and Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva (AZ-07) at the launch of the People\u2019s Environmental Justice Caucus, March 2026 with WE ACT Co-Founder and board member Vernice Miller-Travis, Dr. Ana Baptista of the Tishman Center, and Mar Zepeda Salazar of Climate Justice Alliance.<\/em>[\/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In parallel, we have to address the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/as-epa-revokes-endangerment-finding-environmental-justice-organizations-continue-to-fight-to-protect-communities-from-climate-chaos-hold-epa-accountable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free-pass for polluters policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Trump administration, which is a deadly weight on the shoulders of communities of color and low-income. This is urgently needed, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/research\/sota\/key-findings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost half of people in the U.S. live in places with unhealthy air<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/research\/sota\/key-findings\/people-at-risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">78 million people of color<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We have to defend regulations and go even further to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/daretobreathe.org\/our-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enact strong clean air and health protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while restoring staff and funds at the EPA. We must also fulfill the promise of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/dfe6854c5ec740f59ec02bd3ae80e22c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justice40<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> community\u2011investment programs \u2014 beginning with returning the unlawfully clawed\u2011back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/resources\/stolen-futures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$29 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in grants, so communities can improve health, create renewable\u2011energy jobs, and clean up legacy pollution in neighborhoods across red and blue states. And next, the future version of these investments must remove application barriers and more clearly define \u201cbenefits\u201d so that local leaders can create lasting positive change with long-overdue funding.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the state and federal level, we can demand transparency and community engagement in voting rights advocacy through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/analysis\/6%20Communities%20of%20Interest.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communities of Interest Districts (COIDs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The districts are \u201cgroups of individuals who are likely to have similar legislative concerns, and who might therefore benefit from cohesive representation in the legislature.\u201d State legislative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/analysis\/6%20Communities%20of%20Interest.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COIDs are recognized in 24 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redistricting.lls.edu\/redistricting-101\/where-are-the-lines-drawn\/#communities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congressional COIDs in 13 states.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This would help push back against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/04\/29\/nx-s1-5754657\/supreme-court-louisiana-redistricting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">political gerrymandering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of voting districts that disenfranchises communities of color, by instead districting based on shared cultures, industries, public spaces, or issues like pollution, keeping neighborhoods together to elect representatives that align with their needs. Similarly, we have to pass legislation like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/we-act-statement-on-john-r-lewis-voting-rights-advancement-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which would update and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/john-r-lewis-voting-rights-advancement-act\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revitalize the Voting Rights Act of 1965<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, strengthening legal protections against discriminatory voting policies and practices.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/on-55th-anniversary-of-the-epa-environmental-justice-leaders-networks-push-for-accountability-with-renewed-vision\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times like this<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are exactly when big shifts are born. From a country that was built through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plantationstopollution.selc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploitation of enslaved people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the violent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/920a717dbc9b4c2887c1ce10e8a7ee78\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colonization of Indigenous nations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, environmental justice is what is needed to transform us into a more fair country; a country growing from the self-determination and ingenuity of diverse neighbors who are set up to succeed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><b><\/b>\r\n<h4>True freedom is only possible when every person across race, class, and identity is not only fairly represented, but can also embody a life of dignity, health, safety, and opportunity.<\/h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have to own that collective and interconnected freedom, each of us in a real, active way. For ourselves, and for each other.
