The emissions standards were strengthened in 2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/3781950-biden-administration-finalizes-rule-cutting-truck-pollution\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the first time in 20 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These were a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/the-clean-air-for-the-long-haul-responds-to-the-environmental-protection-agencys-announcement-to-issue-a-supplemental-rulemaking-on-greenhouse-gas-standards-for-heavy-duty-vehicles-in-decembe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaningful step forward<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though they fell short of the strongest, health-protective standards the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/daretobreathe.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean Air for the Long Haul<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cohort and advocates pushed for. Diesel pollution from trucks is responsible for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catf.us\/deathsbydiesel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 8,400 premature deaths, 497,000 missed work days, and $93.9 billion in health damages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every year. Communities of color and low-income neighborhoods <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucs.org\/resources\/diesel-pollution-maps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often live near transportation hubs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and experience outsized exposure to this toxic pollution, increasing their risk of health harms, including asthma and respiratory illnesses, heart disease, cancer, preterm births, and premature deaths.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, members of the Clean Air for the Long Haul cohort share:<\/span>\r\n<blockquote><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDecades of discriminatory policy have pushed major roads, ports and highways into low-income communities and communities of color,\" <strong>said Yosef Robele, Federal Policy Manager at WE ACT for Environmental Justice. <\/strong>\u201cNew York City neighborhoods that are predominantly Black and Latino\/a\/e, like the South Bronx and Harlem, are surrounded by highways and shipping hubs such as warehouses. These developments add <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/sites\/www\/files\/2024-01\/Bronx%20Is%20Breathing%2C%20Jan.%202024.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pollution from thousands of diesel truck trips every day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11269699\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsening air quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> associated with respiratory and other health conditions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assembly.state.ny.us\/write\/upload\/comm\/postings\/2001\/20010907_0002136\/#:~:text=In%20the%20South%20Bronx%2C%2017,2%20times%20the%20City%20average\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children in the South Bronx face a 17 percent asthma risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is over double the national average. Across the U.S., truck pollution is responsible for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/getmedia\/13248145-06f0-4e35-b79b-6dfacfd29a71\/zeroing-in-on-healthy-air-report-2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millions of tons of toxic pollutants including nitrogen oxide and smog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Trump administration\u2019s effort to weaken truck pollution standards will only make these issues worse. This action, alongside the many other clean air rollbacks, is an abandonment of the EPA's obligation to protect human health and the environment.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor our communities, mitigating the harms of tailpipe pollution is a literal life and death issue,\u201d said <\/span><b>Andrea Marpillero-Colomina, PhD., Sustainable Communities Policy Advisor at GreenLatinos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBy the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/transportation-air-pollution-and-climate-change\/smog-soot-and-other-air-pollution-transportation#:~:text=Urban%20air%20toxics-,Programs%20to%20Reduce%20Smog%2C%20Soot%2C%20and%20Other%20Air%20Pollution%20from,4.8%20million%20work%20days%20lost\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s own findings,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vehicle emissions are a major contributor to premature deaths and a serious public health concern. Further, tailpipe pollution harms are not distributed equally. Communities located near highways, freight corridors, ports, and industrial hubs experience disproportionate exposure to NOx tailpipe pollution and its associated health burdens; these are most often<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.gwu.edu\/communities-color-across-us-suffer-growing-burden-polluted-air#:~:text=Overall%2C%20an%20estimated%2049%2C400%20premature,disease%2C%20lung%20cancer%20and%20stroke.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> low-income communities and communities of color<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which endure pediatric asthma rates that are eight times higher than their high-income, white counterparts. This ongoing harm to our most vulnerable populations represents a clear environmental justice issue that can only be mitigated through effective policymaking. The EPA\u2019s latest proposal is the opposite of that and demonstrates complete disregard for our lives.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><\/blockquote>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump EPA\u2019s new proposal to weaken the 2022 heavy-duty vehicle rule will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/09\/nx-s1-5886354\/epa-heavy-duty-truck-emissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cincrease ozone-forming nitrogen oxide pollution from heavy duty trucks by over 4 percent in 2030 and almost 12 percent by 2055<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Additionally, the EPA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2026-06\/420d26002.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> impacts on human health or air quality in this proposal process, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/research\/sota\/key-findings\/people-at-risk\">80 million people of color living in places with failing grades for soot and smog pollution<\/a>, and the fact that Black individuals are nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/blog\/asthma-burden-on-black-community\">three times more likely<\/a> to be hospitalized or die from asthma than their white counterparts. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/clean-air-for-the-long-haul-new-soot-standards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean Air for the Long Haul<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cohort condemns this rollback and broader rollbacks of vehicle and climate safeguards, including its recent proposal to delay the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/clean-air-for-the-long-haul-condemns-trump-administrations-continued-efforts-to-gut-tailpipe-pollution-protections\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light-duty vehicle pollutant standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the repeal of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/updates\/as-epa-revokes-endangerment-finding-environmental-justice-organizations-continue-to-fight-to-protect-communities-from-climate-chaos-hold-epa-accountable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endangerment Finding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and motor vehicles greenhouse gas emission standards.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/clean-air\/electric-vehicle-report\/delivering-clean-air\">benefits<\/a> of electrifying our freight system are immense, and we need strong standards to encourage the industry to adopt zero-emissions vehicles. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0We do not need polluting industry giveaways, we need strong, health-protective EPA rules that deliver clean air, safeguarding our lives and future, especially for environmental justice communities.<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">###<\/p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/weact.org\/programs\/clean-air-for-the-long-haul\/\">Clean Air For The Long Haul<\/a>, a nationwide coalition of environmental justice groups, coordinates federal rulemaking campaigns, centering overburdened communities, to reduce air pollution from power plants, cars, and trucks.
