WASHINGTON – Today the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling, restricted the authority of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to fulfill its mandate to protect human health and safeguard the environment in communities that have a legacy of harm associated with industrial operations.

Dana Johnson, WE ACT senior director of strategy and federal policy, responded with the following statement:

“We are deeply disappointed to see the Supreme Court continue the Trump administration’s policies of dismantling major protections that govern clean air and address the climate crisis that disproportionately has a negative impact on communities of color and people with low incomes.

Millions of Americans live, work, play and pray in conditions that can only be described as environmental and climate emergencies and every facet of their existence, including their health and economic conditions, demand bold and decisive actions to alleviate the adverse effects of fossil fuel operations.

The EPA must, with its remaining authority, work to reduce carbon and other air pollutants in our communities. We also call upon Congress to pass an investment package that centers people, tackles the climate crisis and remedies environmental injustices.”
