NOx Pollution: The Unjust and Precarious Future of Gas Power Plants

This StoryMap is an analysis of the location and emissions data from gas power plants across the country, showing that, on average, these facilities pollute more when located in disadvantaged communities as compared to those that are located outside of those areas. Altogether, we policies that are dedicated to lowering the emissions from the power sector must not only address the climate crisis, but also deliver the pollution relief that environmental justice communities deserve.

This StoryMap tells the story of a proposed liquefied natural gas facility in Chester, PA as part of a larger landscape of placing LNG and other polluting facilities in already disadvantaged communities. In 2022, the U.S. became  the world’s largest LNG producer by installed capacity , a development that will only continue to harm communities of color and increase our reliance on fossil fuels.

AANHPI Heritage & Environmental Justice

Asian Americans – including from East, South, and Southeast Asia-, Native Hawaiʻians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) – along with the multi-cultural diaspora of groups they represent – are unique and wide ranging. Spanning forced migration and complicated immigration histories, as well as complex cultures and traditions, the contributions of these communities cannot be summed up in one acronym or blog post. Here, we recognize the tremendous inherent value of the individuals within these communities, and their essential work in the environmental justice movement.

Native American Heritage

To honor Native American Heritage, we uplift the work of inspiring community leaders like Waghiyi of Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT) and others who protect their community and culture. Social and environmental justice are inextricably tied: Indigenous communities are simultaneously on the frontline of climate change and biodiversity loss while leading the community solutions towards justice.

"Environmental Justice is Cultural Justice" Hispanic Heritage

Rooted in a tradition of environmental stewardship, Hispanic and Latinx people are an important and dynamic part of the shared culture of our country, making significant contributions to social movements and representing a growing segment of the voting population. At the same time, Hispanic and Latinx people often bear the brunt of negative climate impacts living on the frontlines of extreme heat, flooding, and climate-driven natural disasters. Inspired by their heritage and hope for the future, Hispanic and Latinx organizers are leading efforts to address these disproportionate impacts and advocating for environmental justice for all.
