  • WE ACT for Environmental Justice’s Co-Founder and Executive Director Peggy Shepard introduced New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio as he signed the Gas Free NYC bill into law on December 22, 2021, ensuring that all new buildings in the city will be built to use electricity instead of fossil fuels. This is a huge step towards environmental justice because buildings burning fossil fuels produce approximately 70 percent of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollution, both of which disproportionately impact low-income communities and communities of color.
