New York, NY — Mustafa Ali, Chief Environmental Justice Official at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), announced his departure today after 24 years of service to the agency. Ali helped start the office in 1992 during the presidency of George H.W. Bush. His departure comes as President Trump and new EPA administrator Scott Pruitt prepare massive cuts to the agency and environmental justice programming.
In response, WE ACT’s Executive Director, Peggy Shepard issued the following statement:
“WE ACT for Environmental Justice would like to extend our gratitude to Mustafa Ali for his 24 years of service at EPA, and for his efforts to incorporate an environmental justice perspective into regulatory affairs. His work to improve the health and lives of low-income and communities of color on the frontlines of fossil fuel pollution and climate change are commendable.
We know that Mustafa will use his prodigious talents in his new position at the Hip Hop Caucus, and continue to advance critical issues facing our communities. After decades of service in government, we look forward to having him working alongside us and other frontline communities.”
