WASHINGTON, DC – Today the Senate held a hearing to consider the nomination of Andrew Wheeler to serve as the Administrator to the United State Environmental Protection Agency. WE ACT for Environmental Justice’s Deputy Director and Director of Policy Initiatives Cecil Corbin-Mark issued the following statement:

“The Trump administration has continued their clear attack on the environment and health of our communities by nominating Andrew Wheeler to serve as EPA Administrator. While we are not surprised by this decision, we are unequivocally opposed to this nomination. Acting Administrator Wheeler has shown that he is more aligned with advancing the priorities of coal companies than the health of our community here in Harlem and other communities of color throughout the country. Even right now, under Wheeler’s failed leadership, the EPA is jeopardizing the health and safety of all Americans by undermining years of sound and effective environmental policies with its attack on the Mercury and Air Toxic Standards, for example, which are aimed at reducing dangerous levels of mercury, heavy metals, and other toxic air pollutants released from coal- and oil-burning power plants.”
